I absolutely love bedtime. We’ve all heard of the studies that say sleep is so important to our health. I’m totally on board with that, and take tremendous care to have time for bedtime prep and my sleep schedule. My mom often says that’s why I’m so passionate about the Pajama Program, whose mission is to allow children in lesser circumstances to have a proper bedtime experience.
Anyway, I firmly believe bedtime should be three things: comfortable, restful and enjoyable. These are my go-to items that I think everyone should have to prep for the best time of day: bedtime.
Pajama Set: I know lots of people who just sleep in a t-shirt and sweatpants, but there is nothing I love more than a true pajama set. My logic? You get dressed with care for the day, why not for the night? My favorite set is the one pictured in the post from Lake Pajamas. They’re the best! I actually have a lot of sets, but the ones from J. Crew and Old Navy seem to be my other go to’s. As the weather changes, nightgowns are also great to own.
Robe: I have been on the hunt for a great robe. I find too many to be too heavy or thin, with not many options in between. The robe is great for nighttime showerers. While your body is still drying off and soaking up your moisturizer, it’s nice to have a cozy robe to sit around in. Plus, on colder nights and mornings, the robe makes a great outer layer over your pajamas. For the past few weeks, I’ve been considering getting this one.
Eye Mask: This is not really a necessity, more of a luxury. My apartment gets so bright in the morning, that sometimes I wake up from the sun way before I need to. Also, the streetlights are so bright! I love to sleep in darkness, so that’s why I have an eye mask. I’ll admit: it takes a few nights to get used to, but now I can sleep with or without it. This is the one I have.
For the Bed
Sheet Set: Funny story. I thought I had good sheets…and then for Christmas, my parents bought me a set from Brooklinen. Wow. This is not an ad for Brooklinen or anything, but oh my gosh. I am in love. They’re the softest and most cozy thing I’ve ever slipped into. When you’re in the market for new sheets, I’m going to recommend the investment.
For the Room
Candle: In January, I replaced my pine candles around the apartment with ones I got for Christmas. The one in my room is from 5th & Madison, and I love it. The scent is subtle, yet very calming, with the flame giving the sense of warmth throughout the room.
Book: I love to read before bed, even if it’s just one chapter. Having a great (light) book on hand is key to winding down for a good night’s sleep. I’m currently reading Kristy Woodson Harvey’s new novel, Secret to Southern Charm (out April 2018).
Mug and Tea: While I own a ton of mugs, I have my favorites. My tea mug is quite large, and every night I like to enjoy a cup of mint tea before bed. It’s great for digestion and also very soothing.
And I’ve recently mentioned this, but ever since I started taking Magnesium supplements and using Sleep Oil, I’ve been sleeping like a baby. Not sure if the two are related, but I’m really enjoying my sleep.
