Happy Valentine’s Day, ladies and gents! I’m off to San Francisco later today, but before I go I wanted to chat a little about flying. Overall, I’m a fine flyer. I don’t love takeoff or landing, but my biggest issue is that I get so uncomfortable and bored on the plane. Most flights I take are within 4 hours, but getting to and from SF and later this year, Ireland, will max me out. I like to plan for minimum boredom and overall survival on the plane. Here’s how.
The biggest thing for me is making sure my ever-neglected iPad is charged. Last year I joined the New York Public Library, so I borrow books to my iPad app for travel. We all know I love to read, but unless it’s work-related, I try to travel light. I’ll also download a few episodes of whatever Netflix show I’m binge watching or a movie. The only game I really play on my iPad is Solitaire, and I can get sucked in for hours.
I also make sure to have my headphones (over the head, not ear buds) that I literally only use when traveling since they’re so bulky but comfortable. I kind of just listen to whatever I’m in the mood for on Spotify. I also like the Word Search activity books. My mom, grandma and I love to do these on the beach in Aruba, and I’ve gotten into the habit of bringing a book of them on my trips. It’s a great way to kill time without devices.
If you can work from a plane, which sometimes I can, I’ll make sure to try to be slightly productive, even for just a little while.
First of all, how come flight attendants dole out water as if there’s a world shortage? Well, I’ve learned my lesson after too many flights feeling parched. I pack my S’well bottle empty, and then after security I fill it up. For these longer flights, I’ll also buy a big water, because flying is very dehydrating.
So you can bring food through security as long as it’s wrapped. I’m a huge snacker, especially when I’m bored, so for this particular plane ride I’ve got a few things in my bag. I’ve got a PB&J sandwich, apple slices (hate biting into apples) and granola bar with me. I also haven’t eaten lunch yet, so I’ll pick a salad up at the airport once I get through TSA. Other great snack options are nuts and carrot sticks. I’d say away from chips because the salt will just add to your dehydration.
Because of the dehydration, I’m not one for flying with makeup on. Usually my flights are super early in the morning or very late at night, so I’ll do my normal skincare routine with an extra layer of moisturizer and pack my cosmetics for the plane. I’m going straight from work to the airport for this trip, so I’ll use a makeup wipe in the airport and prep my skin with loads of moisture (you need this hydrating mist!). For these longer trips, I’ve bought these under eye masks. I really don’t care who judges on the plane, but I’m definitely using them in the air. When the pilot tells us we’ve got thirty minutes till landing, I usually do my regular makeup routine (it takes me a total of 6 minutes, tops).
Okay guys, that’s it I’m off! Speak to ya from the West Coast shortly!
